The article talks about this type of stove. They say they let the gas escape inside the sealed tent. Apparently they didn't use charcoal. They also say that these group deaths among people who meet on the internet are very common and worrying. What was GPL?

Maybe they used the same method as this guy. Except he turned on the gas in the car and his father discovered him and saved him. It was always GPL gas.

This mother used the same gas to kill herself and her daughter inside her house. No particular preparation, just four simple camping cylinders. Their father found them dead upon returning.

What I don't understand is how is this possible?? These cylinders are very small and have little gas inside them.
Even with a small amount of gas, it'd be possible to make yourself faint without the "suffocating" feel that triggers SI. Then once you're knocked out, you wouldn't need the gas anymore if you could otherwise prevent oxygen from reentering the bloodstream and restarting everything. Feasibly, they could even do this with just some aquarium tubing and bags (a PPHB video showed this).
In short : You don't
need a lot of gas, just enough to initially knock you out and a way to prevent oxygen uptake. The reason gas is combined with lethal oxygen deprivation is because it's a "peaceful" CTB method that just like you're falling asleep, no SI is triggered. You technically need
just enough to initially fall unconscious, then the oxygen deprivation will take care of the rest.
Most gas methods also use it to prevent oxygen uptake. It's believable they'd only need 4 of the things, especially because those things are pressurized, and would contain more gas then you'd expect at 1 atm. Combined with, say, a plastic bag and a rubber band for oxygen deprivation, it could be very effective. Gonna have to remember this one just in case.
I'll also add that most tents are
not airtight, even if you seal up the apparent openings with tape, because most tents have their walls thin and allow air & gasses to pass through. Either they've used a very "heavy duty" camping tent, or they did something else the media/cops didn't share to prevent the spread of CTB info.
