Well that's depressing. Just a remimder I'm not here for anyone but myself and maybe my mother and I have nothing to offer. Probably better for her even if I just get it over with.

You don't have a duty to "be useful" to be worthy of life

I disagree with this quote. I don't think it's ridiculous to exist when you've got nothing to offer the world, as that's inherently ableist. If I could exist without suffering what I am, then I would continue to exist, even if I did so in a thoroughly unproductive manner. I don't owe the world anything and I would be content to just enjoy life, if that were a possibility for me.

Wow. Thats very profound! Didnt know this came from Socrates. I believe that he did not generally mean one must be useful to have the right to live but in his own perspective noting the "i" . He was a mentor and he might have enjoyed life through teaching. As such, when it felt he could no longer teach, he chooses to cease to exist rather than live without his love which is teaching/contributing.

Edit: To sum up, a better translation on my thoughts on this quote would be "Id rather die and be remembered as a mentor/of doing what I love rather than keep on living and be called a fool." Afterall, he was a distinguished citizen, highly regarded among the youth, and a mentor.

This quote just happened to resonate with me when I stumbled upon it in a book I'm reading. And while I agree with hotelbeneathground that we don't have a duty to be useful in order to live, but I literally have nothing left to offer life anymore, and it's for that reason that I don't want to go on living.

This whole website is depressing. I don't expect rainbows and puppy dogs in this place. I will think a thousand times before I decide to get it over with, and deep down inside I wish I still had a reason to go on living. I posted a "farewell to ss" a couple of days ago, but like Facebook, a public farewell doesn't really seem to apply unless the person dies.
