Over the past year, increased regulatory pressure in multiple regions like UK OFCOM and Australia's eSafety has led to higher operational costs, including infrastructure, security, and the need to work with more specialized service providers to keep the site online and stable.

"If you're this, then you're a failure"
"Stop talking to this person if they haven't experienced this as a certain age"
"If they sneeze a certain way then they are a red flag"
"If they breathe, walk two steps and dart their eyes 0.2134352 seconds later than they should then you should ghost them"

Exaggerations obviously.

It seems like, with social media nowadays everyone is just making assumptions about people that they don't even know. TikTok is really bad at this. I see people writing shit like "If you sit in bed all day doing nothing feeling sorry for yourself then you're a failure." As if that person may or may not be going through what is arguably the most difficult period in their lives. Social media is fucking toxic. It is literally designed to keep you scrolling. It is so comically evil when you think that there are literal professionals in the study of psychology (people who have spent years of their lives understanding how the brain works) that have been hired by these tech companies to keep you engaged. For example, it's been proven that people are more likely to react to content that gives them a negative reaction of some kind. They know this, and deliberately design an algorithm to give you negative content so you can react to it, give it clicks and views and they get paid...

Social media has really ruined my perception of myself. I have low self-esteem, so I'm reading all of these posts about people's opinions on what makes a good person, and I'm just completely overwhelmed. I'd LIKE to be good, but I realise that I simply cannot be good in the eyes of everybody. I have decided to just delete all my socials for the year and just try to be in-tune with myself. It will be isolating, but I have two friends I can get in contact with.

I was very suicidal when I was comparing myself to people my age (Turning 27 next year). Being chronically online on social media has definitely made me feel worthless, especially as I haven't hit the milestones that everyone else on Instagram or Facebook or TikTok has achieved.

I think it's truly all about trying to make money off of these apps by just saying the most stupidest thing online to gain likes and engagement. People even post engagement bait for that reason. This world is so obsessed with money. So obsessed with starting a business. So obsessed with profits. I can't live like that. I don't want to be a part of a world like that.

I tried so long, before social media blew up, and even after, to communicate in ways that felt authentic to me. I joined groups, and support groups, but the one place I made the most meaningful connections was in a place something like this - alt.suicide.holiday - and I'd post long enough for people to get a sense of my personality and thinking, but then I was better in email, one-on-one.

Some people might think I'm not a bad group poster, and I know it's irrational to think group algorithm and data mining is any worse than those things in email. But I am, based on personal experience, even scared to go into email now, whereas when I was first online, it was like although I was nervous, I couldn't wait, I really wanted to try to communicate. Plus, I know my email has been hacked, and probably it doesn't matter how often I change passwords, or how many firewalls or levels of firewalls are in place here - I think my every keystroke is monitored. That also makes it difficult to begin new friendships - because I don't want others to be targets, but also, when you feel like you''re constantly watched, it's hard to open up to people, or let them open up to you.

I felt way better after quitting social media.

Social media hasn't really made me think less of myself, but it has made me realize too many other people are self-centered and superficial so it really doesn't matter what I think of myself because most of them aren't going to give me two seconds of consideration, so why should I bother?

If anything, I think social media really opened my eyes to how horrible most people are when they think they can let their guard down and be themselves and say what they really feel about others.
