I've had suicidal depression since my preteens, tried all types of antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs, antipsychotic augmentation, trazodone) for almost two decades and none of them fully worked and had many bad side effects that made me quit taking them. Do you guys think treatment-resistant options with fewer side effects like ECT, ketamine or TMS could work better? I saw a psychiatrist yesterday and he just prescribed me venlafaxine (Effexor) because I haven't tried that one yet, even though I had already tried other SNRIs, because he told me my entire psychiatric treatment history with complete documentation (which I don't have) had to be reviewed before ECT can be approved for me. I'm worried about starting the treatment with venlafaxine if it's just gonna cause the same bad side effects all over again, or increase my suicide risk since I just had a failed suicide attempt two weeks ago. I have an appointment with another psychiatrist next week, what should I tell him so that he seriously considers other options like ECT for me and understands why I'm hesitant about taking another antidepressant yet again, after having them failing so many times already? I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Im not 100% sure on the stats for TRD treatments. But I heard with ketamine it was really promising. Maybe try to tell them you're not willing to go through with all the other drugs that could make you feel worse or suicidal and just want to find a fix for it that will likely work?

Also research TRD treatments that you plan on doing. Some got bad side effects as well. Especially Ketamine, it can be addictive and it can shrink/damage your bladder, but I'm pretty sure most ketamine treatments are done in a clinic under supervision and they test you to check if you're fine.

I've taken tms and ect after trying a ton of meds that didn't work. They didn't do anything, and while I am not a typical patient, I do not recommend it for anyone. Since then I've been doing therapy and journaling and learning about myself and I've gotten a lot better.
