Martha Sepúlveda, 51, this Sunday, October 10, will become the first person without a terminal diagnosis to plan her death through euthanasia in Colombia.

The Colombian woman has suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) since 2018, a degenerative and incurable disease that makes it difficult for her to walk and causes a lot of pain, in addition, it has forced her to be in a wheelchair due to her mobility problems.

Despite the fact that she is not a terminal patient, Sepúlveda suffered at the thought that the end of her would be slow and painful, so she decided to end it before that process began.

"My mother is calm and happy since they told her that she could die because her life was literally hell," says her son.

Through an interview offered to the Caracol channel, Sepúlveda told how she feels days before planning her death.
"I have good luck. I laugh more, I sleep more peacefully, " she said.

Everybody deserves this, with or without some terminal or otherwise visible condition. If you want to end it , you should be allowed to chose your own time and way of death. Why is it that our pets are allowed a dignified end, but humans have to die , in agony often, in hospices/hospitals?!!:hmph:

I have the same question. I realize you're asking rhetorically, but according to a social worker I mention often who has a popular blog about suicide, you "get" to die when your death is happening very quickly anyway, six months or sooner. But you have to keep suffering if there's not enough evidence you're going to die very soon. According to her, the US (at least) decision has little/nothing to do with suffering. It's just a legal and medical convenience. Remarkably, it's the same health care system that forces people who want to stay alive to die, instead, because their insurance companies won't pay for treatment their health practitioners prescribe. Wonderfully humane "health care" system, that.

At least she will be free from suffering and is getting the peaceful death that she wants. I wish I could get euthanasia. Nobody should have to resort to either attempting methods that could fail and are painful or just suffering until they naturally pass away.

Terminal patients should have the right to die peacefully. It should be a basic human right. It's an abomination that that is denied to the dying in most places.

Just having access to the peaceful pill(s), and knowing I could avoid the worst of it when things start heading south fast, would allow me so much more peace of mind during whatever time I have left. Instead, so much of this precious little time left is filled with dread and despair.

My thoughts exactly. Having a reliable, fast way out would be worth more to me than a store of gold.

This should be a human right. Know one asked to come into this cruel world. If someone wants to leave they have the right to exit if they wish

God, that poor woman. This decision is going to cause her so much suffering that could have been prevented, and that she herself wanted to prevent.

I'm so sick of all of this anti-choice bullshit by people/groups/institutions who are completely lacking in perspective and empathy (unless, of course, it's towards themselves – it's CLEARLY never truly about the person who's actually suffering). They're a bunch of fucking tyrants, as far as I'm concerned. It shouldn't be this difficult to be able to die peacefully, in a dignified manner, and on one's own terms.
