I'm confused about guns in MI - is there any kind of gun you can buy without a permit? I called the local sheriff office and they said that I needed a permit for any kind of gun but I'm seeing some stuff online about being able to buy 26" or longer guns w/o a permit. I'm trying to buy something that ships to my door but don't want to risk legal trouble

Why don't you call or go to a local lunch shop? They would definitely know.

You need a background check from the local sheriff's office to purchase a pistol. It's a document they fill out and you have to present it along with a state issued ID at the time of purchase. With a long gun you don't need the document from the sheriff, but you still need the state issued ID. The average citizen can't order a long gun through the mail unless you have an FFL (Federal Fireram License) which I'm confident you don't have 😂 I used to live in Michigan and went through the process for a handgun/revolver. Michiganders love their guns, but the state government not so much.

Can I get the pistol sent to me through the mail? Or would I basically need to go in-person to buy one? I'm finding the rules kind of complicated. I don't have my own car and I'm guessing I would need to have a concealed pistol license to conceal carry my gun

No on the mail. You would have to go in person with your state issued ID and the document that I mentioned in my previous reply. Not 100% sure how the conceal carry laws work, but I'm fairly confident that requires taking classes and a special permit.
