There's a bunch of different games to play, but as you know the odds you'll win any of them are horribly poor. The cards, dice, levers and everything you interact with are also randomly really heavy, or hot, or electrified or other messed up, unpredictable unpleasant things. But pretty much everyone else is playing, and in the corner of your eye you're always seeing someone win, or you hear it in the distance. And everyone plays with a credit card, which you also woke up with but don't really know how many credits are on it, but you need them to eat and drink and use the bed which there is for some reason. So even if you're sick of playing these horrid, often painful games almost no one ever wins, if you want any degree of comfort you have to just keep playing. Most likely to lose, but maybe, maybe, to win.
I have no idea if the analogy carries, but hopefully this late-night musing resonates with someone...
