HELP! Five years ago I ordered a two pound heavy plastic bottle of food grade SN. It came in a heavy plastic bottle with a Red cap. There was no vacuum seal but the lid was tightly screwed on, press down and turn to unscrew. The inner lid seal seemed tight so it seems like a good seal, and was held in place with strips of clear package wrapping tape which had a couple of minor gaps, but otherwise made another semi-seal. The bottle was placed inside a very heavy plastic bag which was so tightly tied I really had to work with it to get it open without damaging it. I kept the plastic bottle in the cardboard box it came in, though unsealed. And I kept that in another cardboard box which was also unsealed. I never opened the SN bag or bottle. The SN remains completely free flowing with no discoloration or clumping. I opened it for the first time tonight for the first time and took a Very Brief sniff and it smelled unremarkable. There seems to be so many opinions about the shelf life of SN and how tightly it needs to be kept. This is a good grade of SN: food grade/FCC, 99+% pure with a max of 0.1% Mono & Dimethyl Naphthalene Sulfonates added. I suppose I can buy more, but I don't know. And I am not sure of the quality I might receive. I am confused by the recommended test methods. This SN seems to be clean, white with no discoloration, free flowing, no clumps and completely unopened until tonight. Kept out of sunlight and at normal room temperature and humidity. What are your opinions?
