i'm trying to figure out how to make a blog and i'm scared ouuuuu.......
i've been looking into nekoweb/neocities but listening to youtube videos explain html makes my blood pressure go up. i don't know html/css. my sister's college major is compsci while i'm an english major that dropped out (LOL). i've always wanted to make an online diary so i figured i should set one up if i plan on dying soon. i'm also looking into wordpress and wix. i mostly want to avoid paying a subscription for a website if i'll only make a few weeks of posts on it. i've never coded before, so i feel nervous trying to touch neocities.

What about using Medium? I know it's a popular blogging platform, but I'm not sure if it has a cost. Alternatively, even if you don't know how to code, building the site should be relatively simple if you use AI (I recommend Google AI Studio, which is free and uses the current best AI model). Also, if you need any help, I'm a computer science student and I know some HTML/CSS. I'd be happy to help you building the website, as I want to create a blogging website too.

If you decide to have your own website, you have two options:
  1. You can purchase your own domain for about €10–€15 per year (many domain registrars offer the first year free or for €1), and use a service like GitHub Pages for free hosting
  2. You can simply use the free GitHub domain and have no expenses at all.
If you are interested, I can comment here a couple of Youtube videos teaching you how to build your own website.

I made pretty solid progress on starting a neocities page for like a month, and then a minor mishap occurred. I refused to code again for the next 2 weeks and then my pc largely gave up on working. One day I hope to return, it was quite fun. I really do recommend it highly.
What i did was follow the w3schools html lessons for a while to get a grasp of the basic concepts, and then move on to actually designing a site. Lookup whatever you need when you need it.

I love nekoweb personally. Making websites is fun even if I don't really know what to put on a blog. Mine's just a bunch of nonsense lol

Whether you use neocities or nekoweb, they use the same thing; html - so, if you search up "neocities template" or "nekoweb template" you'll find some great stuff you can use instead of starting from scratch. I know that really really helped me with the overwhelming parts. I'd say you'll probably find much more resources looking up "neocities", but anything that works on neocities will work on nekoweb.

You can also pick apart others codes and figure out how to do yours, whether that's from a template or someone else's neocities/nekoweb. I wouldn't straight up copy from other sites bc it's kinda bad etiquette but you can right click to inspect a site and see their code, see how they do things. That was helpful for me to learn.

I grabbed a few sites with layouts/templates that I could remember, but there's tons out there;
https://ribo.zone/free/layouts/
https://neothemes.neocities.org/layouts/
https://repth.neocities.org/theme
https://nomnomnami.com/templates/
https://petrapixel.neocities.org/layout-generator/ (this is the one I used, it lets you customize the layout a bit before copying the code so it's less work)
https://sadgrl.online/resources/ (has a layout template but also has tons of other stuff like backgrounds under the archived resources)

I also like searching "web resources", "carrd resources", "rentry", etc on tumblr for fun gifs/blinkies/etc to put on my site. Just be careful if you're sensitive to flashing images and stuff, people don't really put warnings on anything, but you can find neat stuff to decorate your blog with.

Take it one step at a time and don't stress.

I used to have a neocities a couple months ago, it was mostly frankensteined free to use templates though. It was fun but I don't code much anymore lol. I'd recommend it if you want to have complete control about the website's creative direction

i'd suggest tumblr but that sounds perhaps too social networky for what you're looking for. i feel like templates for neocities exist out there, have you looked around? html/css is scary but i believe in you, just takes time. i'm also wanting to work on a neocities site to host my art & random creative writing & worldbuilding stuff.

Just throwing this out there since it hasn't been mentioned, Substack is a pretty popular platform nowadays, I think a lot of Medium folks are there now. It leans more towards essays and high-effort thinky things than the more personal-oriented sites like Neocities, Nekoweb, Tumblr etc but there's a lot of really interesting writing there.

Personally I have a little self-hosted site running off an old laptop-cum-server box sitting in my living room. I haven't updated the blog in like a year or two though, yikes. I just never know what to write about.

Out of curiosity, to the people here who have blogs or are interested in making one, what sort of stuff do you (want to) write about? Where do you find inspiration?

nightly diary entries, vents, photography. i've always been more motivated to do online diaries than real life ones because i actually enjoy the experience of laying in bed and writing deliriously, or slamming keys in my laptop because i can't think about anything besides something that's distressing me. i'm thinking about moving away from sasu because it's not a forum where people are meant to go for connection or friends, since the friends you make here always leave eventually.

i also think that having a blog for my digicam photography would make me happy. i've always wanted somewhere besides google drive to store my photos, and my website would be able to store my photos forever.
