Scrolling random social media sites until the jpgs look more real than the outside world does it for me. Can't recommend it though.

Well, that's a wide field really.
IMO Any kind of addiction aims to suppress the emotions you are feeling at that moment.
Of course drugs and alcohol but also social media, gambling and simply sleep.
It's a way to override temporarily the brain functions that make you feel bad/sad/angry etc. and replace those feelings with euphoria/happiness/joy/relaxation or at least a neutral feeling that doesn't hurt.
In the end, many of us are trying to find an escape from pain. Mentally or physically.

You are absolutely NOT alone!
Google how many people suffer from addiction. Afaik the dark numbers are staggering for alcohol addiction.
I sometimes walk around looking at people trying to imagine what kind of pain and sorrow they are going through. How they might be dealing with it.
Most times you can't tell if someone has an alcohol addiction or painkillers or whatever.
Anyone could be part of the "tribe".
Makes it easier to not feel so alone.
We are everywhere
