The size is 12g, but the pellets are way smaller than I thought. I was praying it was buckshot.

Is that the total number of pellets shown in your hand that you removed from a shell? If so, I counted 14 pellets, which means it's buckshot. If it were birdshot, it would have up to approx 120 pellets for smaller-type birdshot. Can you measure a diameter?
There were like 120 pellets or so. I don't know if can measure them anymore. I had to toss them so no one found them.

imo that birdshot is more powerful than a 9mm. what barrel length is the 12 gauge shot gun?
look at the brass. that's mostly filled with that much gun powder. in that short distance it acts almost like slug held together. that will do it imo. . it's about how much mass and velocity . how many grains? what is the fps ?
but if i had a choice i would buy the 12 gauge magnum slugs or magnum 00 buckshot or 000 magnum buckshot. it's only around $25- $30 with shipping and tax. imo it;s mostly about the power mass x velocity. simple physics. but velocity is more important as the velocity squares the power and energy. i linked the video below. the youtuber doesn't know what he is talking about . that birdshot annihilated that gel which is like a head and brain . a 9mm can't do that to a head. i think all would work but magnum slug > magnum 00 buckshot > birdshot > 9mm.
This below shows here that's it's the energy power that makes a difference . the head exploded in all cases where the energy exeeded 2700 foot pounds. nobody lives if the head explodes or bursts open. these were with rifle and magnum 12 gauge slugs that exceeded the 2700 and it didn't matter where they put it , hit the head with that much power it will burst (if it's a contact shot against the head or in the mouth) . i downloaded the whole study from an ebook library

The bursting effect, defined for this study as disruption of at least 50% of the head, occurred in 25/35 of cases and was related to kinetic energy. Bursting was associated with energies <2700 ft-lbs in 12/22 cases and energies >2700 ft-lbs in 13/13 cases. The volume of gunpowder gas injected into the wound was considered as contributing to the bursting phenomenon. There was no relation of bursting to the specific entrance wound site, type of ammunition, or projectile fragmentation.
u see the black in that gell all that brain is destroyed completely almost a 2 to 3 inch wide wound channel which means how can one miss the brain stem or not kill the brain if a 2 to 3 inch wide area is destroyed of the brain ? plus the initial deformation of the gell is what it does to the brain.
