Here's what happened. Last Monday around midnight (27th), I set up my nitrogen. The plastic tubing with the oven bag and tightening cord was pre-attached. I had my phone camera overlooking my bedroom from behind the bedhead. I started the 15L/hr flow, confirmed I could hear the gas, then turned out the light (which was probably a mistake, as it would have shown everything more clearly).
The bag was rattling loudly with the gas flow. My bedroom door was partly shut because it won't close properly, and the room has high wall ventilators. I pulled the bag over my head and lay back. Next thing I knew, I woke up a couple of hours later feeling very confused. I removed everything, made breakfast for myself and my wife, and carried on with the day – but I was deeply depressed it hadn't worked.
Reviewing the video, everything is visible until I turned out the light. I heard myself moan a couple of times, then just silence with the bag rattling. The video ran for over two hours; the gas flowed for about an hour and fifteen minutes. The tank is a size D beverage bottle. Clearly there was enough residual oxygen in the room.
My lungs (I'm 83M) are only about 30% efficient, due to my past rock and roll lifestyle. I gave up smoking at 63 and drinking last November – don't miss the booze at all. I suspect I had a CO2 panic response that made me rip off the bag.
I don't know what to do now. I could gradually save up $500 Australia Post gift cards to buy Sodium Nitrite, if someone can direct me to a reputable seller who will ship to Australia. My second option is to get my wife's permission, apply for a passport, and use my superannuation to travel to Dignitas in Switzerland. I'm an aged pensioner, so that would take time and planning.
Below is the link to the prep video I posted previously and hopefully a picture of the ripped oven bag. On that Monday I felt very sick and breathless. Tuesday morning I was in an ambulance to Flinders Medical Centre, spent two nights there, and they stabilised my breathing and adjusted my medication. For reference, I had a Trans Aortic Valve Insertion three months ago.
Over to you, good people. I'm not after hugs and kisses – just practical input.
