I've ran into mentions about Autogenic Training a couple of times. It's a practice similar to meditation for controlling one's own body: You lay or sit down, close your eyes and breathe slowly to relax, then speak affirmations while visualizing to influence unconscious processes in the body... for example making your limbs feel heavy and warm. This is generally used as a relaxation technique or to improve health.

I'm asking about it as a method because in at least one recent case with possibly another I heard of years ago, people spoke of using it to will their bodies to shut down. Based on someone's story that I listened to yesterday, I understand a few practitioners who wanted to leave this world actually got close. For this purpose the goal is to stop the heart and breathing: It's said that indigenous people who felt their time is up would go somewhere in the forest and use this to peacefully pass away.
Please share here anything related to the use of this practice. Has anyone here tried it and had any success in slowing down their heart? Do you know of any articles or videos from those who did? I'm particularly interested if there are any exercises with steps available, maybe from indigenous culture or other sources: The ones I found describe using autogenics to cause sensations in limbs or slightly slow down the breath, but nothing about commending the body to shut down.
