So, if a VPN connects us to the internet via someone else's IP- will it look like they're visiting a suicide forum? Not that that is illegal but, what if people are using them to look for dodgy stuff? Could anyone theoretically end up being blamed?

But then, I assume they can run deeper checks to see where the search did actually originate from. Sorry, I'm naive about this kind of thing.

VPN privers aren't held liable for the things that people do with them, but if someone commits a crime using a VPN, law enforcement might be able to order the provider to share their logs which would reveal the true IP address that was connected to the VPN.

Which is why it is important to use a VPN that does not log or ask for any identifying information from you.
