Well saidI consider it like an ocean. It's permanent, but sometimes there's no waives, and sometimes it's fckn storm.
In a way you are right. Some mental health problems are purely psychological whilst others are to do with faulty brain chemistry. There are schools of psychotherapy which try to address the psychological problems. Even ECT can sometimes reboot the brain and break a depressive cycle. One of my favourite books is "The Myth of Sisyphus" by Albert Camus inspired by the myth of a man condemned to ceaselessly push a rock up a mountain and watch it roll back to the valley below. The strange thing is that Camus despite the absurdity of life didn't die a suicide nor does he recommend suicide as a way to escape the absurdity of life.I've noticed a lot of people who are suicidal because of beliefs about their life use particular words and phrases. They tend to catastrophize everything.
I once had severe insomnia precisely because the language I used, the thought patterns I created, and expectations of the future all spiraled together.
I suspect many (but not all) people could slowly move away from suicidal ideation if it's because of beliefs about the future. You can reliably rewire your brain.
I suspect people with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder probably have a harder uphill battle, since the foundation of their mind operates with slightly different rules. The same way some autistic people report having problems with some sensory information (like faces).
Lastly there are people with chronic health problems that I have the deepest sympathies for, because these problems seem to be the most intractable. You can only numb physical pain so much. Requires an iron will and a lifetime of focus to bear the suffering and still keep up with one's responsibilities without losing your mind.
