Was scrolling on twitter ( I know ) and a large clip account posted a video of a young woman who was celebrating her 22nd birthday alone in her car, and reported that she CTBd right after.

OF course bluecheck accounts were engagement farming in the replies, but what made me itch was the amount of people (aka, not bots) that were demonising her, saying that if one lonely birthday is all she needed to CTB she was weak, calling her a coward, saying welcome to the average day of a man etc.

Is it that common sense is at an all time low that people actually believe they know her whole fucking life based on one 30 second clip or is empathy such a rare thing in dumbfuck millennials? They were spamming that because she was so young she "had no clue what real life was" yet. Holy shit

I've noticed that shift as well (maybe because of covid?). Social media used to be so wholesome all cat videos and such but now it's so pessimistic. Reddit, then instagram, then Tiktok. Its like selflessness/kindness doesnt exist anymore.

I saw this happen with a trans kid (not even an adult!!!) who jumped off a bridge, too. Twitter was so vile for how they treated that person afterwards. The lack of empathy the human race has developed is truly sickening. Is this truly the standard we have set? Just being as cruel to eachother as universally possible, trying to one up others on the cruelty and using it as "entertainment"?

maybe because of covid?
Covid for sure was a perfect breeding ground for this type of behavior, imo. Pre-Covid, mocking was usually just contained to other forums and not straight to the person's face. But Covid just made the entire internet mix together until it became normalized to just be shitty to whoever straight towards them. That's just how I saw it, though. There's for sure other factors but I believe the lockdown was the biggest one.

I don't believe anything has changed. Common sense has never been common. It has always been an illusory pipe dream by the handful of people who think the world should be better than it is.

Empathy is there, just never acted upon. Most of us with empathy are not in positions to enact meaningful positive change. Most of the world doesn't care about anyone but themselves. It has always been that way. Civil society is an illusion by people in power who want to keep people under control so there is not chaos and revolt. Civilization is an illusion at best.

The Internet wasn't a nice place that has devolved... it was always the place it is now... technology ripe for abuse, just like everything else. When less people were online it was less obvious... but if you spend very much time in a group of people in any capacity, you begin to see the cracks, how people begin to size up others for weakness and band together in tribes to support their particular prejudice.

Separate the jocks from the nerds... some of the jocks break off into a different group of jocks... some of the nerds break off too.

In the US, black people experienced historical oppression... but then some black people rate other black people over not being "black enough." All women do not support each other, many undermine others just to get ahead even if in the long-term it actually will harm them too. Men don't all stick together, if you can stab someone in the back and get ahead.

People at the core are just horrible. If you happen to be one of the rare not horrible people that actually cares and is willing to put aside your own selfishness sometimes for the benefit of others... you're going to realize quickly that you're living in a nightmare.
