I have always believed that a few-word or even a few-sentence description of a film or book is extremely unfair to them, because it is impossible to fully convey their value in this way. So I will not describe the content of these films myself.

I will only say that both directly concern suicide (to a much greater extent than A Silent Voice) and both moved me very much.

Despite being a huge fan of anime, I have not managed to watch too many of them. I am curious how such a sensitive and valuable subgenre of films deals with the topic of suicide. I would be very disappointed if it almost did not touch on this topic at all or did so in a way that differed from our understanding of it.

Having a girl who likes anime as a gf might save my life

It would be the closest thing I could get to an anime girl

Babylon

I never see people talk about this anime!

I don't know if this is really a spoiler but I felt like there was a mix up due to translation maybe. The show makes out like the 'bad guy' is trying to legalise suicide but technically you can't punish someone who is dead. It made more sense to me that he is trying to legalise assisted suicide in hospital so that the persons organs can be used as most suicides aren't found fast enough

Brack Paradox, a manga by Junji Ito. I haven't read it yet, but I know the plot is related to suicide.

Orange, a short read but very good. This is more on the hopeful side of things, it's very sweet.

X/1999, doesn't directly deal with suicide by name but it is incredibly relevant to the series and the characters; a major theme overall is having a death wish and what that does to someone. The majority of characters in X do NOT want to be here lol. Don't watch the anime, the anime skips right past a lot of it for the sake of making up an ending. However, I would say Tokyo Babylon is required reading first. It is a prequel, but for only two of the main characters. TB is finished and does deal with suicide by name among other heavy topics. It's a very quick read, only like 22 cchapters. If you're looking for something psychological, these two should definitely be on your list.

In general a lot of CLAMP works get very in depth on heavy topics. xxxHolic is like this too.

Full Moon wo Sagashite, another more on the hopeful side of things, but it's been my favorite manga for almost two decades so I have to give it a shout. It deals with suicide a lot. The anime for this is also bad don't watch it lmao.

Welcome to the NHK feels particularly relevant here, as it involves a suicide forum. But it is more focused on NEETism and hikkikomori.

Higurashi has a notable presence of suicide - especially later, but it starts as and remains a horror anime/manga.

And the person with the Mainlander pfp mentioned it already, but Oyasumi Punpun for sure. It's genuinely very depressing though, so proceed with caution.

Orange.
I didn't like the ending though tbh. It was rushed. And this anime isn't really my fav but it's the only one about suicide that I've watched.

I actually watched another anime about suicide — No Longer Human anime but I would never ever recommend it to anyone. It's the worst thing that any human can watch. It's based on a novel by Osamu Dazai. Tbh I could never understand why Japanese ppl consider Osamu Dazai a great writer. He should have never been allowed to learn writing tbh. What a terrible writer.

Himizu and Bokutachi ga Yarimashita. I've mentioned both before and made a thread about the latter. Jumyou wo Kaitotte Moratta. Ichinen ni Tsuki, Ichimanen de is another popular suicide manga that made me sob like a baby when I first read it.

The first manga I read happens to be Oyasumi Punpun. Then I read Aku no Hana.

For novel, from Japan as well, Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami.

Not so suicidal, but mostly about depression, and haven't mentioned yet here, manga called "My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness"
